In 1922, the temperance movement in Sweden threatened to make alcohol illegal throughout the nation. The rallying cry for those opposing this measure? Kräftor Kräva Dessa Drycker! (Crayfish Crave These Drinks!) Yes. Almost one hundred years ago, wise Swedes understood that the idea of having a crawfish boil without strong aquavit and bitter schnapps was thoroughly unconscionable. The crawfish boil is so ingrained into the Swedish psyche that at referendum, the movement for prohibition was defeated. Though we’re pretty sure that crawdads from the bayou don’t speak Swedish, we suspect they have the same cravings as their Nordic cousins. Even if they don’t, we sure do.
